Five hours till the new year.
This Christmas season I opened an old journal and found an entry from January 2000. Eleven years ago. I admit up front, it was not original material. It was a column from WORLD magazine entitled, "For Parents."
Eleven years ago, my daughter was twelve. I was a thirsty sponge for wisdom. I hope I still am. But, when you are raising children, your ears are even more alert.
The author shared six New Year's resolutions that "can change your children's lives." Strong claim. Eleven years later, the wisdom offered holds true. Let me share the resolutions with you and, then, propose a partnership.
1. Resolve to teach your children the value of diligent, competent work - of working hard and doing your best.
2. Resolve to teach your children the right use of money.
3. Resolve to teach your children, whatever their station in life, to treat all others, whatever their stations in life, with respect.
[Note: if you haven't seen the movie, "To Save A Life," you must.]
4. Resolve to teach your children proper manners.
5. Resolve to teach your children proper dress for different occasions.
6. Resolve to teach your children to read, speak, and write the English language.
The author commented on each resolution. I will spare you the extra words. The resolutions are clear enough - except to note the key infinitive (and imperative) is to TEACH. It takes effort on the part of parents. Children do not automatically know these things. The wise lessons must come from a parent if it is to become real. There is no escape. It is your responsibility.
But, here's another New Year's resolution for you. We, at LRCA, resolve to help you. We want to partner with you in these pursuits.
Deal?
Deal.
